ART & DESIGN Research Research Groupings within and across the School Art & Design Research is carried out across the School in the areas of Contemporary Art History, Theory and Practice, History and Theory of Art & Design, Design, and Textile History and Theory. Researchers in this group include : Prof Tom Cassidy, Prof Kenneth Hay, Deborah Gardner, Kevin Laycock, Andrea Thoma, Dr. Judith Tucker, David Walker-Barker, Rob Ward. Centre for Visual Communications - Led by Prof Tom Cassidy. Home of the MA in Design and forum for Postgraduate Research students in the School. ULITA (University of Leeds International Textiles Archive) - Led by Prof Michael Hann. An international research base, archive and forum for conferences, workshops and publications on historical textiles. Research Groupings involving other Schools Centre for Practice-based Research in the Arts (CePRA) - a Faculty-wide forum for practice-based research in Contemporary Art, Fine Art, Music, Performance and related areas, led by Dr Sita Popat (School of PCI) and Dr Rachel Cowgill (School of Music). Members from the School of Design: Prof Ken Hay, David Waker-Barker, Andrea Thoma. LAND 2D - an on-going, AHRC funded interdisciplinary research grouping. Started in 2002 by Iain Biggs (UWE) and Dr Judith Tucker (University of Leeds) as a national network of artist / lecturers and research students with an interest in landscape / place-oriented art practice. The network meets for presentations of members' work, has a web site at www.land2.uwe.ac.uk undertakes occasional group projects, and organises conferences and exhibitions. University of Leeds Popular Cultures Research Group A multi-disciplinary research grouping operating across the University, based in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures and run by Prof David Looseley (School of French) researching into popular music, film, literature and mass media of all types. RADAR - Connecting Europe - Contemporary artists from 6 European countries working on digital projects on the theme of globalisation, social inclusion, European integration in the new Europe and exhibiting as part of the 50th Venice Biennale (funded by the European Commission, "Culture 2000", Venice International University & partners, 2002-4). More details here: RADAR Project Absences - a Digital re-examination of the Highland Clearances (AHRB, £13,153, 2002-3) - themes of forced migration, Scottish history, cultural and historical memory explored through digital print, text and audio installation, exhibited in the Czech National Centre for Experimental Theatre, Brno, Czech Republic, 2002, and The Arts Centre, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan (2007). Distillations and Concentrates: In search of a Hidden Landscape (AHRC, £14,013) - an examination of the former lead-mines at Killhope and the impact of the mining industry on the local landscape and community. A three day international colloquium about artists, cities, creativity and enterprise, opening at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, on Friday 20th June, 12.00 -17.00 until Sunday 22 June, 12.00, and involving delegates from 17 European cities (including Venice, Brussels, Sofia, Barcelona, Leeds and London), local arts practitioners, curators, cultural managers, architects and local businesses. Guest speaker Irena Bauman (Bauman/Lyons architects, Leeds) CHINA NOWXTOL (Xiamen to Leeds) June 9th-16th. As part of the China Now Festival, Prof Kenneth Hay and two former students from Contemporary Art Practice, Andrew Kelly and Richard Taylor present a live interactive art machine in Trinity Church, Boar Lane Leeds and Xiamen, China. Video, performance and sound installations linking the two cities in real-time will enable participants to share in the sights and sounds of each city. "WATCH" - a collaboration amongst: Professor Kenneth Hay, Seetha A, Michael Anderson and Vince Briffa in the National Museum of Fine Arts Malta (17 March - 13 April 2008). The exhibition of paintings, digital prints and video explores aspects of surveillance and media manipulation.

Hibrida - Contemporary Printmaking from the UK and Czech RepublicHibrida - a series of exhibitions featuring, predominantly, print work by contemporary UK artists, exhibited in Bradford, Bristol, Manchester, Northumbria and Brno (2001-2). The Brno exhibition (Galerie Mladych) coincided with the "Absences" and "No 1" (Cuiltural Information Centre) exhibitions in Brno (November 2002).
Hibrida II - Bradford, Cartwright Hall and the Bradford Gallery (Horton Road) and
"Eden", Digital print by J.Michael Anderson. Three simultaneous exhibitions of contemporary printmaking opening on Friday 6th May 2005 in Bradford and Brno, and including new work by Ken Hay, Andy Anderson and David Walker-Barker from Contemporary Art Practice, as well as by Milos Rankovic, who has recently completed his Ph.D under Prof Ken Hay. The exhibition is the result of a long-standing co-operation between Ken Hay and colleagues in Bradford and the Czech Republic and is curated by Colin Lloyd and Ian Colverson from Bradford College. A fully illustrated catalogue, with essays by Robert Galeta, Kenneth Hay and Jiri Havlicek was published on the 6th May 2005. Hibrida IIIIncorporating artists from the UK, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania is developing now and will roll out in 2007-8 with a series of exhibitions, events, openings, and colloquia in the UK and Eastern Europe. The Frozen Acadmey is an on-going collaboration between students of Josef Danek in Brno, CZ and Contemporary Art Practice, Leeds with partners in Berlin. Terra Nullius - Exhibition of new photographic work by Jim Brogden in the Corridor Gallery, School of Design, relating to 'non-places' in the urban landscape, emerging from his research Ph.D on the same theme and collaborative participation with the LAND 2D network. Daniel Banaczek from Cracow, Svetlana Misirkov (Bulgaria), Charlotte Ginsburg (UK) Sigrid Lange (Germany), and Steffi Jüngling (Germany) from the International RADAR Project all visited Leeds to work on new projects and work with students, sharing their research experience with staff and students. New site-specific works for Leeds, including films, DVDs, animations, conference papers and publications and exhibitions resulted from these visits. Form Cracow and Berlin, curators Magda Olasinska and Anna Morlinghaus introduced students to their mobile exhibition platform "Available Art" and worked with staff on the "City Lights" Project for Cracow Public Transport (2005). "The Frozen Academy" (2008) - Multidisciplinary art and research project between Prof Josef Danek, (Brno) and Prof Kenneth Hay (Leeds) involving a regular forum in Cyberspace, meeting in a Virtual Academy on "Second Life" and exhibitions, real and virtual in Berlin, Brno, Leeds, Toulouse and Cyberspace.
